For those of you who are just starting to look into yoga, the question of its association with various Hindu belief systems is bound to surface at some point. And we may wonder what the relationship, if any, is between yoga and religion. Yoga is a personal spiritual practice that does not require adherence to any particular religion. But for those who are religious, Yoga tends to bring out the inner unity that exists at the central core of all religions.

The deeper understanding and acceptance of the self that comes with the practice of yoga is relevant to all major religions. People of many different faiths – Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Jews – as well as agnostics and atheists, practice yoga because of its numerous benefits and life-enrichment. Some yoga practitioners are more religious than others, some not at all. But Yoga itself is simply a tool for exploring the depth of our human nature, of plumbing the mysteries of the body and the mind.
